Frequently Asked Questions
Can I tie them in myself?
- If you are experienced at Blinging, maybe. This is really a two-person job. Stylists charge a nominal amount to tie them in, and it takes about a minute a strand to tie in by an experienced 'Blinger'. For a small investment and a few minutes, you can turn heads everywhere you go. You can always ask a friend for help, too. Our online video is straight forward and easy to follow (and is translated into several languages), but as with any new skill you must practice to become proficient. Be patient with yourself as you are learning.
How long will Bling Strands™ last?
- This varies from person to person. Normal wear can be anywhere from a few days to several weeks, and is directly related to a person’s own hair loss rate. We all lose hair every day, and some of us more than others. A properly knotted Bling Strand™ will withstand everyday washing and styling, with the strand coming out when the hair it is tied to falls out of the scalp naturally.
Can Bling Strands™ be "temporarily" tied in?
- If you plan to wear Bling Strands™ for just a few hours at a special event, have your stylist just tie one knot. The strand can easily be slid off of the hair by placing your fingers over the knot and gently pulling away from the scalp. Another alternative is to tie the strands to bobby pins, clips or barrettes and place them in the style or under layers.
How many strands do you use?
- An average hairstyle will use 8 to 12 Bling Strands™. For a subtle hint of glimmer you can use 4 to 6 strands, and for a more glamorous look use as many as you like. A dramatic look will use as many as 12 to 16 strands. Some clients have even worn more.
Is there a pattern to follow when tying Bling Strands™ in?
- Use your creativity. A basic style will use one Bling Strand™ on each side of the part tied at one inch intervals, trimming the strands to match the length of the hair. To be more creative, tie throughout the style so that there are a few on top and a few in the layers underneath to peek out and sparkle with movement. Some clients like several tied close together for a streak of sparkle, or just a few around their face or in their bangs.
Do Bling Strands™ have to be placed right at the scalp?
- Not necessarily. If they are tied along the part of a hairstyle they will look better placed right at the scalp. If you are tying into layers and longer hair, strands can be placed part way down the hair. Experiment with placement for different hairstyles and looks.
Can I wash my hair?
- Yes! Bling Strands™ can be left in while you shampoo and condition your hair.
Can I brush, blow dry, flat iron and curl my hair with Bling Strands™ in?
- Yes, with care. As with any extension, you will need to treat your hairstyle gently for maximum longevity. Keep heat settings on your styling tools below 400 degrees (medium to medium-high). Avoid using fine tooth combs and do not use crimpers.
Will my styling products damage Bling Strands™?
- While all of your normal styling products are safe to use and will not dull the brilliance or your strands, keep in mind that significant amounts of hair sprays, gels and mousses can make it difficult to brush through your style and create extra stress on your hair and the Bling Strand™ tied to it. Treat your hair gently to insure that your strands will stay tied in as long as possible.
Can I color my hair with Bling Strands™ tied in?
- If you are doing a color weave, strands can be lifted out from the hair being processed and they will be fine. For all over color, remove the strands and replace them after the process. Most of the chemicals will strip the color from the strands, or at the very least dull the finish. Brazilian treatments use heat that can damage the strands, so place them in the style after the treatment.
Can I use Bling Strands™ in ethnic hair that is very curly?
- Absolutely! And they look gorgeous. The strands will follow a curl from a curling iron, but to achieve a tight curl just run the strand between the outside edge (not the inner blade) of your scissors and your thumb. It will curl like ribbon. Do it gently and repeat the motion until the curl has the desired tension to match the client’s style.
What are Bling Strands™ made of?
- They are made of a clothing-grade polyester fiber that is manufactured specifically for us in the United States. It is guaranteed to be lead-free, non-toxic and non-flammable. We are proud to be a U.S. company and use only U.S. products and employees to bring our product to you.
My Strand doesn't seem securely tied in. What am I doing wrong?
- If strands are sliding out, your knots may not be tied properly. There are three parts to making a secure knot.
- 1. Complete the slip knot around the hair. This allows you to get the strand as close to the scalp as possible.
- 2. The second part of the knot actually secures the Bling Strand™ to the hair. To do this, you must use the Bling Strand™ and the hair to make the knot. Do not drop the hair and tie the two pieces of Bling together. If you do this, the Bling Strand™ will be secured only to itself and it will slide right off of the hair.
- 3. Once you have completed the two knots using the hair and the Bling Strand™, lay the hair down and separate the two pieces of Bling and gently tug them in opposite directions. You will get the little ‘pop’ that tightens the two previous knots, turns the knots inside out and locks it. Be careful not to pull too hard and stretch the strand and ruin it, but make sure to get the ‘pop.’
How do I remove Bling Strands™?
- While most clients want their strands to remain in their style as long as possible, they are easily removed by grasping the strand and giving it a gentle tug. If the knot has been properly secured, the hair will usually come out with the strand. DO NOT cut them out.
What are some good hair/Bling color combinations?
While everyone has their own favorite color, here are some suggestions. Keep in mind that it is fun to use more than one color in a style for a low-light and high-light (like Sizzling Chocolate and Sizzling Copper in red-brown hair).
- DARK HAIR: Sizzling Black (in black hair with blue undertones it is gorgeous!), Sizzling Chocolate and any of the
brights. Sizzling Silver or Sizzling Champagne give a dramatic contrast, too. - RED HAIR: Sizzling Copper, Sizzling Champagne, Sizzling Rainbow, Sizzling Red, Sizzling Fuchsia, and Sizzling Purple.
- BLONDE HAIR: Sizzling Silver, Sizzling Champagne, Sizzling Lavender, Sizzling Pink, and any of the brights, especially Sizzling Turquoise.
- MEDIUM BROWN HAIR: Sizzling Copper, Sizzling Chocolate, Sizzling Rainbow, and any of our bright colors. Sizzling Silver or Sizzling Champagne also give a beautiful highlight.
- GRAY OR SILVER HAIR: Sizzling Silver, Sizzling Lavender, Sizzling Pink, or any of the brights.
We have also learned that many people like to have a color that is similar to their own hair color for everyday wear. So, if you are a first time 'Blinger', try a package in a color that is closest to your natural color and then a favorite bright. You'll see what we mean and you'll get hooked, too!
